Toby’s Story: From Survival to Belonging

When Toby was first found, he was living on the streets in rough condition—thin, exhausted, and covered in abnormal growths. He was later diagnosed with Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT), a contagious cancer in dogs that most commonly affects the genital area, but in more advanced cases can spread to other parts of the body, including the skin and even the face or eyes. The bumps covering Toby’s body were consistent with a severe, progressed case.

He also had a noticeable injury to his eye. It’s hard to say whether it was directly caused by the TVT or from trauma he experienced while surviving on the street—but either way, it was clear he had been suffering for some time.

Toby was taken in by a foster who gave him something he likely hadn’t known before: consistency, care, and safety. Over the course of several months, he received treatment, proper nutrition, and time to heal—both physically and emotionally. Slowly, the tumors began to regress, his strength returned, and his personality started to shine through.

The transformation was incredible.

The dog who once lay weak and defeated is now standing strong, alert, and full of life—his tail up, his eyes bright, and his spirit completely changed.

And the best part?
Toby found a home.

He was adopted by a local family, where he now lives not as a survivor—but as a loved companion.

Jasper’s Story: A Life That Almost Didn’t Begin

Jasper was found alone in the rain—tiny, fragile, and just days old. His eyes were still closed, meaning he was likely around one week old or younger, far too young to survive without his mother.

A local community member found him and, worried he wouldn’t make it, removed him from the situation and reached out for help. ROAR was able to connect the kitten with someone willing to take him in—someone who would become much more than a temporary caregiver.

At that age, survival is never guaranteed.

Jasper required around-the-clock care, including syringe feeding every few hours, warmth, and constant monitoring. Kittens this young cannot regulate their body temperature, eat on their own, or even eliminate without stimulation. Every day was uncertain.

But he kept fighting.

And she kept showing up.

Over time, Jasper grew stronger. His eyes opened. His movements became more confident. The tiny kitten who once fit in the palm of a hand began to explore, play, and develop a personality all his own.

Today, Jasper is thriving—healthy, playful, and, by all accounts, completely spoiled.

And he never left.

What started as an act of kindness turned into a forever home.

Arte’s Story: The Ones Who Stay

For a long time, Arte was a familiar sight in West End—wandering quietly, keeping to himself, surviving day by day.

He wasn’t in obvious crisis, which is often the hardest kind of suffering to see.

But Arte was not okay.

It’s believed he survived canine distemper, a serious viral disease that can leave lasting neurological damage. In Arte’s case, it likely led to incontinence, causing him to frequently soil his back end. Over time, this made him uncomfortable, isolated, and overlooked.

He was also battling ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease that contributed to his extreme thinness and overall weakened condition.

He wasn’t the dog people rushed to help.
He was the one people weren’t quite sure what to do with.

Until someone decided to try.

A kind local took Arte in, giving him a safe place to land. It wasn’t a perfect situation—but it was a turning point. For the first time in a long time, Arte wasn’t alone.

And then something even more powerful happened.

One of ROAR’s volunteers made a decision—not based on ease, but on compassion.

She chose him.

She saw past the mess, the medical needs, the uncertainty… and committed to him as a special needs adoption.

Today, Arte is no longer the quiet dog roaming the streets.

He is cared for.
He is safe.
He belongs.
